Larry Gerber asked me to write a piece for the FSU Men's Glee Club and we agreed that it was going to be a composition they would perform on the "Seasonal Celebration" concert at Florida State University. "Hush! My Dear, Lie Still And Slumber" was written after the birth of my son, Jonah, in the Summer of 2005. I wrote the solo for my counter-tenor friend, Reggie Mobley, who sang the premiere performances at Florida State University. The solo may also be sung by a mezzo-soprano.
Text by Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
Hush! my dear, lie still and slumber;
Holy angels guard thy bed!
Heav'nly blessings without number
Gently falling on thy head.
How much better thou art attended
Than the Son of God could be
When from heaven He descended
And became a child like thee!
Soft and easy is thy cradle;
Coarse and hard thy Saviour lay,
When His birthplace was a stable
And His softest bed was hay.
May'st thou live to know and fear Him,
Trust and love him all thy days;
Then go dwell for ever near Him,
See His face and sing His praise!
