mp3 - Stetson Men, DeLand, FL
Peter J. Durow, conductor
(the published score is slightly different from this recording)

Beginning with the alphabet letters "a" through "g," I assigned adjacent notes up the keyboard to letters "h" through "z."  The letter "n" is a "g" and the letter "i" is a "b."  I began my setting of Blake's timeless text with a recurring motive in the flute (g-a-d-b-a) which spells my daughter's name "Nadia."

The integral flute part adds a pastoral quality to the music. The unison vocal lines that branch into four-parts give the men an opportunity to express the text in a simple and harmonious fashion.

Poem by William Blake (1757-1827)

  Little Lamb who made thee,
  Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life and bid thee feed.
By the stream and o'er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing wooly bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice:
  Little Lamb who made thee,
  Dost thou know who made thee?

  Little Lamb I'll tell thee,
  Little Lamb I'll tell thee:
He is called by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb:
He is meek and he is mild,
He became a little child:
I a child and thou a lamb,
We are called by his name.
  Little Lamb God bless thee.
  Little Lamb God bless thee.
