There Is No Rose
For SATB Voices with Keyboard Accompaniment

"There Is No Rose" was recommend by the American Choral Directors Association Repertoire and Standards Committee and was included in the 2013 National ACDA Two-Year College Reading Session in Dallas, TX.
This timeless text has been set by numerous composers. My setting for SATB voices and keyboard accompaniment uses a pentatonic melody that is first presented in unison. Some elements that will need to be rehearsed by the singers include the tonal shifts from the parallel minor and major keys and the concept that the 8th-note does not remain constant when going from 6/8 to 2/4 and back to 6/8, but rather the metric pulse (conducted in 2) should remain the same.
Early 15th Century, anonymous
There is no rose of such virture,
as is the rose that bare Jesu;
Alleluia. (Praise the Lord)
For in this rose contained was
Heaven and earth in little space;
Res miranda. (Wonderful circumstance)
For by that rose we may well see
That He is God in persons three;
Pari forma (Equal beauty)
The angels sungen the shephers to:
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Gaudeamus (Let us rejoice)
Then leave we all this worldly mirth
and follow we this joyous birth;
Transeamus. (Let us cross over)
