Beauty, Peace and Joy (A Christmas Carol) was written for Dr. Craig Zamer and the Mastersingers (Cookeville, TN) for their "Carols and Lullabies" concert. Craig asked for a work that would feature an oboe with piano accompaniment and also for a composition that would end on a "high note." The homophonic texture throughout makes this a Christmas carol that is suitable for church and community choirs of varying abilities. The music was written to express everything the title suggests.
Poem by Jean de Brébeuf (1643); Jesse Edgar Middleton (1872-1960), alt.
O children of the forest free,
The angel song is true:
The Holy Child of heaven and earth is born today for you.
Come kneel before the radiant boy who brings you beauty, peace, and joy.
Jesus, your king, is born;
Jesus is born.
In Excelsis Gloria.
